Kevin The Green Sea Turtle
While out on the kayaks tonight, I came across a Green Sea Turtle. This was really exciting to me because you don’t see many of them anymore. But something was wrong, turtles are graceful in the water, this one seemed to be having some troubles.when I got the kayak over him, I noticed his front flippers were gone, and he was covered in tumors.I stayed with him until he came up for a breath of air, then I grabbed him.
He was flipping around like crazy and slipping all over the place.I got him situated on the kayak with his back legs hanging off so he couldn’t escape. In his condition he needed a trip to the turtle hospital, we have that here. So I called them and they sent over the turtle ambulance to the Reef Resort boat ramp. The ambulance showed up in 11 minutes, talk about quick service, they beat me to the boat ramp.
The turtle EMT told me he was in pretty rough shape and would probably live out the rest of his life in captivity because of the missing flippers. it was a good thing we captured him when we did, he didn’t have a very good chance in the wild. As he was getting loaded up, I asked my new friend Leelu to name him, and she said he shall be called Kevin. So the next time you are driving the Keys, swing on by and say hello to Kevin at the Turtle Hospital in Marathon, it is a neat place to visit. You won’t be sorry.
