7 Mile Bridge

Connecting Knight’s Key, in Marathon, to Little Duck Key, it was among the longest bridges in the world, at the time it was built.
US1/Overseas Highway, the older bridge, is only open to pedestrians and cyclists since 2008 and was constructed from 1909-1912 under the direction of Henry Flagler. It was originally built for Flagler’s railroad. The safety handrails you see in this image were actually the train tracks used on the bridge. Much of the original bridge is still in tact and in 2014 The Florida Department of Transportation approved a $77 million plan to restore the old bridge.
